About me and my therapy practice
You’ve probably arrived at this page because you’re at a difficult point in your life. It can feel daunting to consider counselling at first but often talking to someone can make things feel lighter and bring a sense of hope and meaning. Together, we can gently explore what is going on for you, going at your pace. I am committed to helping you find a way through.
My name is Janine. I am a fully qualified psychotherapeutic counsellor. I provide therapy face-to-face, online and via telephone to adults and young people over 18 years old. I have a Masters with Distinction in Integrative Counselling and am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy which means I strictly adhere to their ethical code of conduct. As well as my private practice, I work as a relationship counsellor for Relate Bradford & Leeds.
Before re-training, I worked in the music industry for twenty years at various cult independent record labels in London such as Rough Trade Records and Warp Records. Therefore, as well as working with a wide range of people, cultures and experiences, I also provide specialist counselling to musicians and music industry workers, as I understand the unique nature and distinct needs of the music community. I am a member of the Music Industry Therapist Collective (MITC) – an award-winning, international group of specialist psychotherapists, counsellors and psychologists who provide psychotherapy to musicians and music industry professionals. I am a registered practitioner for BAPAM (British Association for Performing Arts Medicine). I am also on the board of advisors for Launchpad
Music who support the music sector across Yorkshire with signposting to advice, funding and opportunities.
I learn a great deal from all of my clients. I feel humbled and inspired by each of them and the courage it takes to face difficulties to bring about meaningful change in their lives. To turn towards the hurt and the pain that life throws at us can feel like a huge mountain to climb in the beginning. However, sometimes it is not just about the need to feel better, but the need to better feel. Gaining this self-awareness is when healing can begin.
Practice description
My integrative approach is principally relational and person-centred. This means that building genuine trust and respect in our therapeutic relationship, free from judgement, is my priority. I may also draw from other counselling theories such as CBT, psychodynamic, attachment theory, compassion focussed therapy, transactional analysis and feminist therapy.
As a feminist, my practice is anti-racist, LGBTQ+ aware and inclusive. My affirmative approach supports people of all gender identities, sexual orientations and relationship styles (GSRD). I adapt my approach to meet each client’s individual needs by working pluralistically. In other words, it is my belief that we are all unique and complex beings, so collaboration and client preference is key.
If you arrive at our first session with clear goals in terms of what you want to get out of our time together, I will make sure we focus on this and may provide tools or techniques to help you manage the symptoms day to day. Alternatively, if you don’t know, feel confused, or stuck, or at a crossroads in your life, we can sit with that too and explore those difficult feelings to try and find a way through. I can also help you explore unhelpful patterns, such as ways of being in relationships with others and look at the root causes of this and what might be helpful going forward.
Therapy provides a safe, empathic space for self-reflection, allowing you to foster more clarity which is essential to healing. Ultimately, it is my belief that you are the expert in your own life so I’ll help you uncover the resources that are personal to you to bring about meaningful change.
